Mahindra and Ford have officially put an end to their discussions regarding the proposed automotive joint venture. This raised concern regarding the calling off of the upcoming Ford-C SUV, which is based on Mahindra XUV500. But after quite a round of rumours and speculations, it has now been confirmed that the plan to launch Ford-C SUV in India remains intact.
Earlier, Mahindra and Ford had entered a collaboration for developing the all-new C segment SUV, and the project was named “Project Black.” Both the companies invested huge amounts in this project. The next generation Mahindra XUV500 will be rolled out somewhere around March-April this year. Speculations are doing the rounds that the Ford C SUV will be launched by the end of 2021 or at the beginning of 2020.
The Ford-C SUV will be sharing the platform as well as several other components with the Mahindra XUV500. There will be about 75% similarity of components with the sibling XUV500. The production line for the C-SUV and XUV500 will be the same. Ford engineers are going to make some alterations in the chassis and suspension set up. Hence the driving dynamics will be Ford-like.
The Ford-C SUV will be rolled out as both 5-seater and 7-seater options. The model will be locking horns with the likes of Tata Harrier, MG Hector, Jeep Compass, Tata Gravitas, and so on. There can be two engine options – a 2.2/2.0L turbocharged diesel engine as well as a 2.0L turbocharged petrol. The former will be producing around 180bhp of power and 400Nm of torque. The later one will be capable of churning 190bhp power and 330Nm torque. Buyers will get the options of both automatic as well as manual versions. There will be an all-wheel-drive system as well as a front-wheel-drive system.
Ford will also be launching the EcoSport in collaboration with Mahindra’s TGDi turbocharged petrol engine. This engine will be replacing the EcoSport 1.0L turbocharged petrol engine. We can hope that this model will be rolled out in a few months’ time.
