American SUV manufacturer Jeep has officially revealed the Jeep Commander. Jeep Compass is a fairly popular vehicle in its segment and the new Jeep Commander will be known as the Jeep Meridian in India. Unlike its predecessor, Meridian is a 3 row SUV that can accommodate 6 or 7 people. It is most likely to be sold in the international market first. Indian version, the Jeep Meridian will be launched in the middle of 2022.
The Meridian will be 4,769mm long, 1,859mm wide and 1,682mm high. That is a substantial increase in size from the Jeep Compass. The right hand drive variant of the SUV will will be built in the Ranjangaon plant of the American brand. International version will be left hand drive which will be built in Brazilian plant of the company.
The SUV borrows many features from the larger Grand Cherokee L but on the exterior styling front, it has many similarities with the largely successful Jeep Compass. The front grille design and the chrome resembles Compass. The large LED headlamp and slim tail-lamps are derived from the larger model. The bumper of the Jeep Commander is unique with large faux vents that has DRLs & fog lamps.
Due to the longer body length and wheelbase, the interior will be comfortable. In spite of the additional row of seats, the interior seems to be spacious from the images. The interior looks premium with the brown leather upholstery.
The dashboard comes with a new 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster that is compatible with both Android Auto & Apple CarPlay. It comes equipped with Alexa virtual assistant to control the features and climate control of the car.
The safety duty is carried out by the seven airbags, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist. The SUV is powered by the 2.0-litre Multi-jet diesel engine mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission. The engine produces 170hp of power and 380Nm of torque. The 4×4 system is the standard in all models. Indian variant could come with a mild hybrid system. It will be launched in 2022 and would take the established players like the fellow American brand Ford Endeavour and the Czech Skoda Kodiaq.
